Pathways to Self-Discovery #15
Enjoying the sunset in Nice, France.
Dear friend,
I'm still in vacation mode with my family. My two girls are off from school until mid-August. I love this time together with the family. We take each day as it comes, sometimes with no plans on what to do, and let the spontaneity of the moment invite us into play and rest.
Summer has always been the season of change for me. I remember so clearly two years ago as I was sitting on my front porch with my journal and a pen. There was a deep ache within and a longing for something different.
Summer seems to do this to me. When I get to slow down, the unconscious agenda of my soul seeps into the conscious. There are words, thoughts, and sentences that form. I decided to listen to those nudges from within.
For me it was clear that I had to take action. The other option was to suppress. That wasn't a real option because I had had enough sleepless nights and waking up in the middle of the night from being overly stressed.
I didn't know where I was headed. I knew I needed to head somewhere and follow the nudges from within.
It was daunting. Because I knew that following that voice within potentially meant starting from zero in a business of my own, going down in salary for some period, and choosing a path in life where people around me would think I was crazy.
I had worked hard for six years getting my PhD, and I was sitting on a special council for the Minister of Social Affairs, I was the go-to person for everything in my PhD field. Giving all this up and starting a new chapter was indeed scary.
I took a plunge, not by quitting immediately and throwing myself off a cliff. I still had a mortgage to pay and a family to provide for. So I took it step-by-step.
Why am I telling you this?
Because I know that as you reach your 30s and beyond, you'll get to know this voice of the unconscious soul that asks more of you.
Life will feel as if you're walking in someone else's shoes or shoes that are too small to fit your feet.
You can choose, which many do, to continue walking in those shoes and tell yourself that this is normal and everyone feels this way.
I know this because I was that person. Clients, friends and family members I talk to are those people who are so scared to take action and start a new chapter in their lives.
These also find themselves either with a sense of lethargy, low energy, depression or anxiety, trouble sleeping or psycho-somatic issues. Their bodies start breaking down and reacting to the disconnect between their soul and their lives.
I say soul here to mean everything you are, including everything you're unaware of. The psychic processes within you that make up your totality.
Carl Jung articulated a language to describe the elusive unconscious parts of our existence and experience. It has no clear definition, but what is clear is that it calls out to us to listen. As we listen, we grow in deeper alignment with ourselves, and we grow in authenticity.
We come back to ourselves and discover a new and wild energy within.
Here's a practice that you can engage in to start listening to those nudges within.
Sit in a comfortable place where you won't be disturbed by anyone.
Take a pen and a journal or paper.
Sit there for 20 minutes in silence and simply write whatever comes up for you.
If you truly want to start listening to the longings and nudges of your unconscious, then get into the habit of visualizing your deathbed and then looking back at your own life, ask yourself if you lived a life true to yourself or a life that was expected of you.
The answer might change over time, and that's okay. I'm learning to pivot as I go, learn new things as I live, and tweak and stay open to the vastness of life and all it has to offer.
With great love,
Gabe
Ps. I am working on several projects currently. I'll keep you posted about their development. I have started to co-create the Rewire Summit 2.0 and some digital products and e-courses I know will serve you well. Ds.
